The news of a rain spell creeping up from the South; July is yet to arrive, but the song of cicada boisterously fills up a small neighborhood park. Hadn’t they been around in August, when the children were on vacation? I am unsure whether my memory failed me, or the bugs decided to come out early after having had enough with the untimely hot weather.

Recent WWOOFing photos depict either pulling up or mowing down grasses. It seems like the war against weeds – all those plants shooting up overnight – is in full swing. Although we conveniently lump any inedible plants into β€œweed”, every single one is a precious entity that settled on the Earth after billions of years of evolution. Feeling its gravity, one cannot just toss it off.

With this summer forecasted to be historically hottest, I cannot help but stop grumbling over the weather, thinking about the toil of farmers at open fields sweating to return the soil’s vitality until the very last weed. If I used AC less often, I would emit less carbon, and the Earth would heat up less, saving a bead of sweat from the farmer. Signing off with this silly reckoning, I post the letter of July.
